Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance 2015
Spectators arrive very early Thursday morning for the Tour d’Elegance, including yours truly, to get a first look at much of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance field. The cars line up on Portola Road near the Equestrian Center in Pebble Beach. The cars will drive portions of 17-Mile Drive, through the California mountains and valleys, ending and parking along Ocean Drive in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
The Tour is open to all entrants in the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Many Concours entrants participate in The Tour for the sheer joy of driving their vehicle on such scenic and historic roads. They also drive The Tour knowing if two vehicles tie in class competition at the Concours, the vehicle that has successfully completed the Tour gets the extra point. Any damage incurred on The Tour (and it does happen) will not be deducted at Concours.
The Tour in recent years has been led by Sir Stirling Moss and wife Susie in a Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster. Once the cars arrive in Carmel they are displayed on Ocean Avenue while the drivers and passengers adjourn for lunch. It is a tribute to the owners, especially the pre-war era cars, that they make this approximately 80 mile trip.
Later in the day we attended restorer Tom Yang’s fun gathering at The Quail. Tom is noted for his work and expertise on 250’s and 330’s, and his renowned website TomYang.net
