Ferrari of New England in Norwood, MA recently had an unveiling the new Ferrari 488 Spider. Although I am a more of coupe fan, one cannot argue with the technology of today’s retractable hard tops which give the same rigidity as the coupes. The retractable hard top on the Ferrari 488 Spider unfolds and retracts in a record 14 seconds and can be raised or lowered when the car is moving. The Spider also has a glass electric rear window that can be adjusted regardless of whether the top is up or retracted. This is a nice benefit for conversation, or that bothersome hair-tangling breeze at speed.
The new Ferrari 488 Spider has a twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8 engine, that produces 661 hp and launches the car 0-60 mph in less than 3.0 secs. Kerb weight is 3362 lbs. and the 7 gear F1 dual clutch transmission revs up to 8000 rpm (the F458 revs to 9000). The 488 Spider also up-shifts 30 percent faster, and down-shifts 40 percent faster. The body style integrates the blow-through rear spoiler, active diffuser, and double-height front splitter which improve down-force by 50 percent. The new Brembo Extreme Design braking system allows that the 488 Spider”s stopping distances are 9 per cent shorter than the 458 Spider.
The Ferrari 488 Spider was well received, especially in the Blu Corsa, matching luggage optional. In summary; it’ll be quick and easy to get in trouble, however the improved Brembos just might save one from oneself.
