The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering 2015
The Quail Motorsports Gathering commenced in 2003 as another experience for car enthusiasts to enjoy rare automobiles during Monterey Auto Week in a unique garden-party setting. Held at the pretty Quail Lodge and Golf Course in Carmel Valley, the event has grown over the years; more cars, more people, and more expensive tickets. Included in the steep $650 per person price is an eclectic array of pre- and post-war cars and motorcycles, on-site parking, multiple food pavilions, interesting vendors, plus a Quail poster and book.
The majority of cars on the field tend to be fairly special. Registration stipulates that vehicles accepted for The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering cannot be displayed at any other public event during the week leading up to The Quail. This isn’t really enforced. Many of the cars are quite interesting, but so are the cars on Carmel’s Concours on the Avenue which occurred earlier in the week, and is free to attend.
The logistics of The Quail were changed for 2015, some for the better, some not. The drive into the show was horrendous, 1.5 hours to drive 3 miles from Route 1 to parking at an early 9 am. Ticketing was much easier this year, forgoing the long check-in lines of past years. The food pavilions were over crowded, non-car people essentially planting themselves under the umbrellas for the day, and the food was not as good or as abundant as in years past.
The vehicles on the field ranged from unique and rare, to a few pedestrian fillers. There were several standout sponsors like Pagani with its Huayra and Bentley with its concept EXP 10. Acura, a Saphire sponsor, seemed woefully out of place. Ferrari made a conscious choice not to be at the Quail in 2015, instead putting their efforts into the charming Casa Ferrari on Route 1 in Carmel Highlands.
Featured themes at The Quail in 2015 were Long Tail Cars of Le Mans, Coachbuilt Ferraris, Iconic Pre-1965 Porsches, Pre-War Sports and Racing, Post-War Sports, Post-War Racing, Supercars, the Great Ferraris, and Sports and Racing Motorcycles. Although plenty of exciting cars, after having attended The Quail for many years, the 2015 event was not their best yet.
